Before adding an image
NB before adding an image to the library, make sure
-
it has the appropriate permission for online use
-
it is of appropriate quality for Barnardo’s online use - make sure the resolution is high enough – see image sizes
-
it’s in landscape format
-
it has a meaningful name – using agreed naming system (site section where image is used followed by brief description e.g. Fostering, Bev and Kim in garden)
-
it hasn't already been added to the library
NB2 that last point gets more and more difficult the bigger the library gets. There will, eventually, one hopes, be an improved media library or even a proper asset management system. Until then, this is a guide to using the somewhat less-then-perfect system we have at our disposal. It's possible to filter images by name in the library, so if all photos are meaningfully named it should be possible to check whether the image you're thinking of adding has already been added.
Adding an image
Save the image somewhere accessible such as your desktop. If you’re adding an image to put on a page you’re working on, go to the image library by clicking E (for inline image) or select (for banner image) image, then click Upload image in the top row of options
then click Choose file.
Browse to wherever you’ve saved the image (e.g. desktop) then doubleclick it. Its filename should appear on the ‘select image’ page. If it’s the wrong one, click Remove and start again. If it’s the right one, click Select files. It should now appear as the banner image on the page you’re creating AND it’s been added to the ‘select image’ library.
NB images MUST have a meaningful name and alt text.
Image name
If the name of the image doesn’t describe the photo or its use on the website or isn’t distinguishable for dozens of other photos in the library, change it. It’s a good idea to change it when saving to your desktop before adding it to the media library (see above). If you didn’t remember to do this, you can rename it in the media library.
Click the media tab at the top of the CMS list page, then click the edit button for the image you want to rename in the right-hand operations column.
On the edit page you can overwrite the media name on the top field.
NB - VERY IMPORTANT - Don’t rename an image if it’s already in use on the live site (until/unless there’s further development of the media library, Drupal is using the image name rather than its thumbnail to determine what appears on pages, so if you change the name of a photo that’s already on a live page, it will disappear and just leave a blank space on your live page).
You can also use this media edit page to add alt text.
Alt text
Depending on where you add your image (banner, inline image, feature image) you may be prompted to add alt text in a popup.
If so, write a brief description of the image in the Alternative text field so it makes sense for visually impaired user listening to a screenreader, then click embed.
If you aren’t prompted to add alt text (e.g. currently if adding a new photo to the library while adding a banner image) click edit under the small picture in the banner block, or edit your image from the list under the media tab (see image name above).
Alt text is more than good practice; it complies with Barnardo’s commitment to publishing content that’s accessible for everyone.
Change an image
To change the image click remove then click select image and start again.
