Enter page title in the title field at the top of the page
It’s VERY important to make sure your title is
-
meaningful – give the user a fair idea of what the page is about
-
unique – don’t duplicate a title already in use on the site
-
frontloaded – put the most relevant word(s) at the beginning of the title – the first word is most salient to users scanning a screen as well as search engines
-
less than 65* characters in length – including spaces
Here’s an example of a bad (hard-to-find) title:
Report on the findings of an evaluation of the Barnardo's LINK adoption support service
Here’s an example of a good (frontloaded) title:
Adoption support: evaluation of Barnardo's LINK service
*65 is the usual character limit for google search results – anything longer than that gets truncated, so the first example title above would display in search results as:
Report on the findings of an evaluation of the Barnardo's LINK ad
It’s also important to write your title in sentence case (only the first word capitalised – and any actual names of people, places, etc.) because
Page title in sentence case
not only complies with Barnardo’s style guidelines but is also easier to read than
Page Title With All Capitals
which is scientifically proven to take your user’s eyes longer to move up and down over all those unnecessary capital letters.
Editing a title
If you need to change the title you can do it at any time by overwriting the current title in the title field. This is straightforward if the page isn’t yet published and you haven’t overwritten the url path.
If you have overwritten the url path, but not yet published the page, simply overwrite it again to reflect the new title. See url path settings [link]
If the page is already live and the new title is very different from the old one, you’ll need to change the url. See Change a live url.
If you’re just making a minor change to the title you may not need to change the url.
